If He Had Been With Me’s Chapter 17 is not a separate chapter in the novel’s chronological narrative. Instead, the novel is told in Autumn’s first person as she looks back on her life. Instead of representing a straight line of events in the plot, the chapter numbers represent different memories or points in time. Given the structure of the book, the climax of the story in August, when Finny and his girlfriend Sylvie are involved in a car accident and Finny passes away, is the closest equivalent.
